From Sketch to Setting: The Custom Jewellery Journey
From Sketch to Setting: The Custom Jewellery Journey
Custom jewellery begins before metal is shaped or a gemstone is set. It begins with a conversation: what the piece should represent, how it should feel when worn, and which details will make it personal.
Ceylon Artisans was founded around the idea that clients should be closely involved in this journey. Instead of choosing only from predetermined designs, a client can participate in the decisions that transform an idea into finished fine jewellery.
The first conversation
Some clients arrive with a clear design in mind. Others begin with a gemstone, an occasion, an inherited piece, or a feeling they have not yet translated into form.
The first stage establishes the purpose of the jewellery, how frequently it will be worn, preferred colours and shapes, meaningful details, practical requirements, and an appropriate budget. A strong brief does not require technical vocabulary. Clear personal preferences are often more useful than a completed drawing.
Selecting the gemstone
A gemstone can become the starting point for the design. Its colour, shape, proportions, and individual character influence what can be built around it.
Consider more than size. Observe how the stone responds to light, whether its colour feels balanced, how the cut distributes brightness, and how its shape relates to the intended design. Natural variations should be understood as part of the stone's identity and considered alongside appearance, durability, and setting.
Developing the design
The idea then begins to take visual form through references, sketches, and digital development. This stage resolves the silhouette, stone placement, setting style, proportions, metal colour, comfort, and how the piece will appear from multiple angles.
Good custom design is not about adding detail everywhere. It is about deciding which details deserve attention.
Reviewing the direction
Before manufacturing, the proposed design should be reviewed carefully. A CAD drawing can explain construction and proportion, but it remains a technical representation rather than a photograph. Display colours and reflections may not reproduce the final materials perfectly.
Approval should confirm the design direction, dimensions, and relationships between components before making begins.
Making, setting, and finishing
With the design approved, the piece moves into manufacturing. Depending on the design, this may involve forming or casting components, preparing settings, assembling the structure, setting gemstones, refining surfaces, and final finishing.
Ceylon Artisans has developed in-house manufacturing, allowing design and making to remain closely connected. After setting, the complete piece is polished and reviewed before presentation.
The final jewellery carries more than material specifications. It reflects the gemstone selected, proportions refined, and decisions connected to its wearer.
